In 1826, King Ludwig I decreed that LMU was to be relocated from Landshut to Munich. The university had been founded in Ingolstadt in 1472 and moved to Landshut along with its library in 1800. As a result of secularization in 1802-03, the library grew to over 100,000 volumes and became the third-largest university library in Germany.
To commemorate LMU’s departure from Landshut 200 years ago, the Moosburg Gradual will be on display at the Cistercian Abbey of Seligenthal during the Landshut Court Music Festival. The parchment manuscript, created around 1360, is one of the most significant late medieval music manuscripts in Germany. It contains liturgical chants and a famous collection of Christmas carols. Today it is part of the LMU Munich University Library’s treasured collection of rare books.

The exhibition is a project organized jointly by the LMU Munich University Library, the Landshut Court Music Festival (Landshuter Hofmusiktage e.V.), and the Cistercian Abbey of Seligenthal.
